The land trust started out as an advocacy partnership for a network of “greenbelt” lands in and around the city of Columbia. The greenbelt concept was subsequently adopted by the city as it developed a substantial offering of parks and trails to the community.

Greenbelt has 4 properties under its stewardship.  They cover the range of management/ownership options: conservation easements, trust-owned land; and a public partnership dedicated to public use.  The two easements represent distinct land uses: one is agricultural, the other urban; and both are residential sites of the owners.  For the public partnership, the land trust rents, at a nominal fee, a portion of the land to the city of Columbia for its recreational pedway. Access to this piece of land allows the city to connect major sections of its network of bike-hike trails.
